Ida Withers Harrison was born in Mississippi, daughter of Confederate General William Temple Withers. Her family moved to Lexington, Kentucky, following the Civil War; and she graduated from Patapoco Institute of Maryland in 1868. In 1879 she married Lexington native Albert M. Harrison, a Democratic party official and city registrar, who engaged in a variety of philanthropic projects.
